New Record for Pentland Firth Swim

At 6pm on Wednesday 24th August open water masters swimmer Andrea Gellan set off from South Ronalday in Orkney to swim the 7.5km across the Pentland Firth. She arrive at Duncansby Head on the mainland of Scotland at 8.40 pm, completing the swim in a record time 2 hours 40 mins, 2 hours quicker than any previous attempt to swim the Firth . Andrea is the first person to successfully swim the route from South Ronaldsay to Duncansby Head.

‘The swim was just amazing. I have never experienced so many different water states in one swim. The water was flat at the start- like swimming through quick silver. Then I hit the whirlpools where the tides meet. They were fun to swim through- very choppy water first then loads of bubbles and I could feel my body twisting with the forces. Then I hit very choppy water which was really difficult to swim through. I swallowed water and felt sick. Then I was into large rolling waves which were much easier. My boatman Hamish told me I only had a mile and a half to go. I could see the cliffs at Duncansby point getting closer and closer. The sun was beginning to set behind the cliffs. We were so close I could see all the striations in the rock face. I swam in through the swirling water, changing from dark blue to light azure towards the cliff face. It was surreal to be at the bottom of the cliff face amongst the waves and rocks looking up at the lighthouse.

She was accompanied throughout her swim by a  safety boat piloted Hamish Mowatt , who steered a straight course through the strong tides, her husband Alistair who supplied her with warm energy drinks and Carole Mowatt.

In addition to setting a new record Andrea has raised over£1200 towards aid for the east Africa drought crisis appeal as well.

Scottish Gas Scottish Open Water Championships 2011 Report

A member of InCAS has successfully returned from her first taste of National level competition after competing in the Scottish Gas Scottish Open Water Swimming Championships held at Milton of Morenish, Loch Tay over the weekend of 6th & 7th August.

Despite the idyllic setting, the weather unfortunately degraded generating difficult conditions and lowering the water temperature, thus making the course even tougher for the competitors.

Regardless of these conditions, Fourteen year old Gabby Gatherer, still a relative novice to the sport given she is still within her first year of transition to open water competition, demonstrated admirably quality and determination. Gabby chose to waver entry into the 1 Km Novice event, and selected entry into the 13-14 years age group 2 Km Open Competition showing a true reflection of her grit and will.

Gabby swam extremely throughout the race despite it being her first experience of swimming in an open water loch, and battled hard in the closing stages against her experienced adversaries in a fight for the second/third position, and was just pipped on the line to take the Bronze medal in a time of 32:30.00. This time delivered a 2 ½ minute improvement upon her previous time undertaken as recently as six weeks ago at the East District Open Water Championships held at the relatively sheltered Loch Ore Meadows. Nonetheless, the result is a major achievement for this aspiring open water swimmer in her first national competition securing a podium finish and placing third in Scotland.

Gabby  trains predominantly with the Fife Performance Swim Squad, with InCAS being her home Club. She also competes with Dunfermline Water Polo Club and has been selected to represent Scotland Girls at the forthcoming Tri-Nationals Cup to be held in Limerick, Ireland between the 19-21 August, which shall see Scotland compete against Finland and Ireland.

British Gas ASA National Age Group Championships Report

Two members of InCAS, Thirteen year old Tain Bruce and Eleven year old Lauren Pirouet both of InCAS, returned from the grand finale of this season’s swimming calendar after competing at the British Gas ASA National Age Group Championships held at the international venue of Ponds Forge, Sheffield between 21-25 July 2011.

The swimmers, competing within the composite Fife Performance Swim Squad, were against the very best of age group swimmers, aged between 11 to 14 years, from across Britain. The high standard of qualification for the event resulted in limited swimmers from across Scotland achieving consideration times for the Championships. Indeed qualification in it’s own right is a significant achievement for any swimmer.

The first day of the Championships opened with Tain Bruce competing in the preliminary heats of the opening event, the girls 200m IM. Tain opened her account with a time of 2:33.79, just outside of her personal best, and saw her place in 31st position overall from a strong field of 54.

Teammate 11 year old Lauren Pirouet started her Championships with a bang in her preliminary heat of the girl’s 100m freestyle. A strong first 50m of 31.07 saw Lauren touch in with a time of 1:04.60 which not only saw her qualify in 6th place for the finals but also set a new East District age group record by over 1 second. Barely rested, Pirouet continued with her good form in the heats of the 200m backstroke event, once again proving her worth on the National stage with another finals qualification performance recording a time of 2:38.48, which also set a new East District Age group record.

The evening of day 1 saw Lauren Pirouet take her place in her inaugural British National’s finals commencing with the girl’s 11 years 100m freestyle final under the glare of the TV lighting and expectant  atmosphere . The depth and quality of the field was apparent, and Pirouet reaching a finals position had already achieved a primary target. Her opening 50 metres was swam aggressively, allowing her to turn in 7th position, and strike for home finishing in 1:04.38 placing 7th overall. This time once again broke her East District Age Group Record set literally hours before.

Two finals in one evening was indeed a fine opening to this promising 11 year old ‘s Championships, and the final of the girl’s 11 years 200m backstroke event was again a tough affair given she was entering in 9th position. A controlled first 100m saw Lauren move up a couple of positions however her 3rd 50m saw her ultimately finish in 9th position in a time of 2:38.12, shaving some further time off her earlier qualifying time, and in the process setting another new East District age group record. An excellent opening day of two qualifying swims, two finals and four East District age group records.

The morning of the second day of the Championships opened with Lauren Pirouet competing in the preliminary heats of the girls 400m freestyle in which she swam a controlled race leading from the front with precision splits to ensure her place in the final for the girls 11 years age group in a time of 4:48.05, placing the 3rd fastest entry time, and incredibly break yet another East District age group record.

Tain Bruce followed stepping up onto the blocks to start her second day of competition in the 100m butterfly heats. In yet another outstanding field of competition from across the UK Tain swam admirably with a strong return leg to touch in on 1:08.52, unfortunately narrowly missing out on a finals position.

The evening of day 2 hosted the finals from the day’s competition, and once again the atmosphere was outstanding with a packed spectators gallery showing their support for the finalists. Lauren Pirouet stepped onto the floodlight finals stage in the opening event of the evening with nine other competitors from across Great Britain, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates, with a strong contest expected with many swimmers raising their game for the final. Not deterred by the circumstances Pirouet went out hard in the first 50m and turned in pole position in a time 31.57. She continued with her determined, yet controlled swim in the knowledge many of her competitors would be pressing her through the latter stages of the race and she settled into third place. It was evident after the first 200m the contest for a podium finish was available for the taking, and Pirouet rose to the challenge digging deep through the third quarter of the race to maintain her stroke and pace to allow her to attack for the finish in the final 50m in which she held off strong competition to take third place in a time of 4:43.20, setting a new Scottish National age group record and also two new East District age group records in the process. Pirouet was however awarded with the Silver medal due to the first placed swimmer being from outwith the UK. A well deserved result for the young Scottish swimmer.

The third day of the Championships, Saturday, saw the two InCAS swimmers rise for another day of tough swimming with Lauren competing in the girls 200m freestyle event, followed by Tain Bruce in her favoured event, the 200m butterfly, and Pirouet moving onto the 800m freestyle later in the day.

As with every race at this level of meet there were no easy heats, and  Pirouet required to record yet another personal best swim to even be considered for the finals later in the day. Lauren didn’t disappoint and once again displayed a calm exterior to deliver another personal best time of 2:18.73 to book her place in the evening’s final. The time also gave her another East District age group record, and was a mere 0.4 seconds off the Scottish National age group record for 11 years.

Tain Bruce was also in attendance on the third morning competing in the girls 13 years 200m butterfly event, a tough race whatever the circumstances. Lining up in heat 5 against her adversaries Bruce went out ahead of her personal best in a time of 33.06 at the 50m mark, and improved upon this at the halfway point at 100m in 1:10.45. The final 100m was a tough affair but she dug deep to bring her home in a time of 2:31.22. Disappointment however in the form of a technical infringement at the start of race unfortunately saw Tain disqualified.

Lauren Pirouet returned to Ponds Forge for the afternoon session, and one of her favoured events the 800m freestyle which would be a heat declared winner and as such treated as a finals scenario. Pirouet lined up in her heat focused and ready for the task ahead. An excellent first 100m took her out ahead of the pack and saw her settle into racing from the front. Her main competitor in the heat from Dubai eventually tussled the lead from Lauren, but Pirouet reacted well and tracked her through the 200, 400 and 600 metre marks. Sensing her time was on target Lauren pushed ahead in the final 200 metres to bring her home in a time of 9:44.17, not only setting yet another East District record but also smashing the Scottish National Age Group Record which previously stood at 9:56.29. This impressive performance eventually saw Lauren lift the Gold medal, and the title of Age Group Champion of Great Britain.

Following this fantastic swim, Pirouet had little time to recover and focus for her final of the 200m freestyle held during the evening of Day 3. Once again a host of international swimmers delivered their best wishes via video links, and the stage was once more set for an evening of superb swimming. Lauren Pirouet took her place once again on the finals stage, and managed to deliver yet another fine performance touching in on 2:18.75, literally matching her entry time, and giving her a 6th place overall. No mean feat considering she was still recovering from perhaps her swim of the Championships hours before.

Day 4 brought yet an other qualifying round for Lauren Pirouet in the girls 100m backstroke event, and given the weeks exertions, the question was could she once again produce a personal best swim to have a chance of qualifying for the evenings finals. Pirouet responded with an outstanding performance going out in the first 50 metres on her personal best time and raising the pace on the return leg to record a time of 1:13.90 which surpassed expectations and saw her qualify for the final in 6th position. The time also set her 10th East District Age Group record of the Championships.

The morning also saw the arrival of two more Fife Performance Swim Squad members, 12 year old Morven Rae-Seaman and 13 year old Rachel Smith, who together with Tain and Lauren formed the quartet for the girls 4x200m freestyle relay event. The team had qualified after winning the Scottish National Age Groups earlier in the year.  Rachel Smith as lead swimmer set off in a fast paced heat and it was clear the competition was fierce. Morven Rae-Seaman took over the second leg for her 200m freestyle passing over to Pirouet, with Tain Bruce bringing home the team in an unofficial time of 2:35.19.

The penultimate evening of the Championships saw Pirouet once again in the finals arena on this occasion for the girls 11 years 100m backstroke final. Given the previous improvement in her time, the final indeed presented a challenge for Lauren knowing full well nothing less than another improvement would be required. She went out hard in 36.16 but came back in the second 50 metres even harder bringing in her 11th East District record with a new personal best time of 1:13.76 and placing 7th overall.

The final day of the Championships brought both Tain Bruce and Lauren Pirouet back for their final events of the competition, the 400m Individual Medley. First to take to the blocks was Tain Bruce as she had qualified through a short course entry time despite her time being significantly better than the later heats achieved at long course standard. Tain’s first leg of butterfly was on pb to allow her transfer into the backstroke 100m in the middle of the pack. Tain’s breaststroke leg however was outstanding and saw her pull herself right up the field and well placed for the final 100m freestyle in which she brought herself home to touch in on 5:23.24 and place 16th overall, an excellent swim to conclude her week’s competition.

Next up, Lauren Pirouet, was looking to also close on a high. Lauren went out hard allowing her to close her first 100m slightly ahead of her pb, perhaps taking too much out of her after a hard weeks swimming as the next two legs of backstroke and breaststroke saw Pirouet slightly behind her times but a strong final 100m freestyle saw her reduce that deficit to finish in a time of 5:41.76.

In all an outstanding display of swimming for both Tain Bruce and Lauren Pirouet, with the latter returning home as British National Age Group Champion.

East District Open Water Open Championship Report

The dismal weather experienced at Lochore Meadows on Saturday 18 June did not dampen the results for two  InCAS swimmers who were competing in the East District Open Water Championships 2011.

Despite the weather the Championships brought together many swimmers from across Scotland for the Open meet, which also doubled as the East District Championships, across a variety of age group categories.

Fourteen year old Gabby Gatherer, swimming in her first Open Championships endured the chilly waters and swam extremely well to take the Silver medal in the 13/14 years 2 Km Open category, a fantastic achievement given the adverse weather conditions and a resultant water temperature of only 14 ⁰C, which forced many swimmers to withdraw from completing the race. This swim also crowned Gabby as Champion in the 13/14 years East District members category.

InCAS teammate, 14 yr old Jennifer Milligan, competing in the 15/16 years age group also succeeded in securing the Silver medal in the 2 Km Open category despite swimming against older competitors. This results comes on the back of her recent success at last weekend’s Tayport Trophy Competition and exhibits Jennifer’s natural aptitude for this form of swimming which is becoming increasingly popular throughout Britain.

Both swimmers train with InCAS as their home Club, with Gabby also training with the Fife Performance Swim Squad, and also competing within the Caledonia water polo team.

InCAS Distance Meet & Tayport Cup Reports

InCAS once again hosted their annual Distance Meet which is specifically geared towards providing younger swimmers an opportunity to compete within the longer distances of the swimming competition events, and also provide the prospect to secure National Squad selection times for Bronze squad training camps run by Scottish Swimming.

The meet attracted Clubs from all across Scotland, from as far north as Nairn, Buckie, and  Aberdeen and as far south as Duns, and the field of swimmers was indeed of high calibre, however, this did not prevent the host Club, with limited numbers compared to the larger contingents, from finishing second overall following many fine results across the course of the weekend.

Two InCAS swimmers succeeded in breaking three Scottish National Age Groups over the course, together with three East District Age Group records. 12 year old Tain Bruce swimming in only four events due to illness managed to take four Gold’s, breaking the 12 years Scottish National Age Group Record for the 400m IM in a time of 5:08.24, which is also a new East District Record and a British Age Group qualifying time. Tain also won Golds in the 200m IM (2:27.11); 200m butterfly (2:29.77); and also the 200m breaststroke (2:49.92).

Equally as impressive over the weekend was fellow training partner 11 year old Lauren Pirouet who went one step further and broke two Scottish National Age Group Records. Pirouet’s first record came from a controlled swim in the 800m freestyle in a time of 9:45.97, an impressive four seconds off the previous Scottish record. Lauren’s second national record was secured in the 400m freestyle on Sunday, swimming aggressively to lift the record in a time of 4:42.20. Both swims secured Gold’s for this promising 11 year old competing in the girls 11-12 years age group, and also broke two East District Age Group records in the process. Lauren went on to compliment her Gold’s with a Silver in the 200m freestyle, and also two Bronze medals from the 200m backstroke and the 200m butterfly. These results together with a 5th place in the 200m IM event resulted in Lauren finishing in 2nd place in the girls 11-12 years group.

In terms of medal haul, young 9 year old Harris Bruce, swimming the Boy’s 10 years and under age group secured the Best Boy award following Gold’s in the 200m butterfly (3:09.50); 1500m freestyle (21:37.15); 200m IM (3:02.61); 400m IM (6:16.74), and Silver’s in the 200m breaststroke (3:31.90); 200m freestyle (2:36.13); 200m backstroke (2:57.56); and the 400m freestyle (5:48.03). A remarkable achievement for this youngster competing against swimmers a year older.

In the same age group, 10 year old teammate JJ Moultrie-Waring enjoyed a 100% success rate of 3 Gold’s from 3 swims in the 200m freestyle (2:32.19); 200m backstroke (2:51.13) and the 400m freestyle (5:30.36).  Closely following behind was 10 year old James Gray who also enjoyed a successful meet securing four medals from his four events. James topped the podium to take Gold in the 200m breaststroke (3:26.95). This was followed by a Silver medal in the 200m IM, and two Bronze medals from the 200m freestyle, and also the 400m freestyle.

In the girls 10 and under age group, InCAS swimmers took all three medals in the 800m freestyle event with 10 year old Leighona Harper winning Gold, (14:06.56), closely followed by  Dana Brand in Silver position (14:09.08), and Erin Hogg in Bronze (15:26.86). A fantastic result for these swimmers in their first ever competitive distance event. 10 year old Dana Brand also went on to expand her medal collection with two further bronze’s from the 200m breaststroke and the 200m backstroke. Also obtaining a top six finish in the age group was 10 year old Millie Knox who took fifth place in the 200m backstroke (3:32.23), an 11.5 second improvement. Olivia Ballantine, also aged 10, closely followed behind to take the sixth place in the 200m backstroke (3:32.84).

The boys older age group  11-12 years saw 11 year old Jack Harrison continue to grow in confidence, particularly in the 200m backstroke in which he placed 3rd in a new PB time of 2:37.04. Jack also  placed in the top six with a fifth place in the 400m freestyle (5:01.40); and two sixth place finishes from the 1500m freestyle (20:07.83), and the 200m freestyle (2:23.97).  Also competing in the 11-12 boys was Hayden Moffat, in his final meet representing InCAS prior to emigrating to Australia. Hayden took a massive 34 seconds off his previous  400m IM in a new time of 6:09.35, and also recorded two further huge PB’s in the 400m freestyle and the 200m butterfly event. Fellow teammate, 11 year old Joe Nally, also recorded a 10 second PB’s from his 400m freestyle, and 200m butterfly swims, which was a great achievement following his reduced training regime. Also performing well and securing a number of personal best times was 11 year old Kieran Wilson in his first distance meet.

In the older groups, 14 year old Gabby Gatherer swam extremely well to secure some impressive PB times which saw her take 6 seconds off her 200m breaststroke (3:12.15); 5 seconds off her 200m freestyle; and 4 seconds from her 100m butterfly split in the 400m IM event. Gabby recorded a total of 7 PB times from the meet.

Swimming well within the boy’s 13-14 years age group was 14 year old Conor Nally, who was rewarded with a Silver medal in the 200m butterfly event in a time of 2:37.04, a 9 second improvement. Conor also went on to place fourth in both the 200m IM (2:33.40); 400m IM (5:20.68); and two sixth place finishes from the 200m freestyle (2:14.11) and 400m freestyle (4:41.11).

Other InCAS swimmers who obtained Personal Best times, and indeed recorded their first times at these distance events were Emily Adams; Erin Donaldson; Kelsey Knox; Rowan Ormiston; and Cara Smyth.

With limited numbers the InCAS results punched above their weight, placing them above the larger Clubs of Warrender and City of Aberdeen in the final Club standings.

Club Vice-President, Derek Pirouet, commented ‘The success and results achieved over the course of this weekend bear testament InCAS are a swimmer focused Club accomplished at nurturing and developing  outstanding swimmers as demonstrated by the times recorded across all age groups within the Club.’.

Not to be outdone by their pool colleagues, two members of the InCAS Club were competing on Sunday in the Tayport Cup Open Water Meet, which has been held on the River Tay since 1970. The event is one of the more prestigious within the Open Water Calendar, and the success of the indoor swimmers was reflected equally as strongly by both the Club President, Andrea Gellan, and Jennifer Milligan.

14 Year old Jennifer Milligan, who has been migrating more into the Open Water events showed her promising talent for the sport in securing the Hart Trophy for the fastest Junior Girl, 16 years and under, in a time of 23:45 which was also the fastest of the day. Teammate Andrea Gellan finished in second place behind Jennifer in a time of 24:09, a 2 minute 19 second improvement over previous years, and won the Tayport Trophy for first female, 16 years and over swimmer. Both swimmers were awarded with Ian D McIntosh gold medals for their outstanding swims.

Dunfermline Amateurs Sprint Meet Report

A number of younger InCAS swimmers competed in the annual Dunfermline Amateurs Swimming Club Sprint Meet held at Glenrothes on Saturday 28 May 2011. The meet aimed specifically towards the younger age groups within the swimming fraternity, and what a fantastic demonstration of swimming skills the InCAS swimmers delivered.

Top InCAS swimmer on the day was 9 year old Harris Bruce, who dominated his age group taking Gold in all four individual events, a meet record and also the Top Boy Award for the 9 years age group. Harris’s first gold came in his opening event, the 25m butterfly in which he not only recorded a new personal best time of 16.83, but also set a new meet record in impressive form. This swim set the benchmark for the day for this young star, and he delivered a further three wins in the 50m breaststroke, shaving 0.53 seconds from his personal best time; 100m IM in 1:24.95; 50m freestyle in 33.88 seconds; and 50m backstroke, again in a pb time of 39.18. A fantastic achievement and display by the young swimmer.

Despite the above results, other InCAS swimmers were hot on the heels of Harris, also demonstrating their quality and worth within the meet.

In the boy’s 10 years age group  JJ Moultrie-Waring enjoyed an excellent day of competition in which he battled hard all day against a new adversary from Grangemouth. JJ opened his day with a tough swim in the 100m IM event, in which he was literally just touched out at the finish to take 2nd place, but succeeded in taking a massive 4.93 seconds off his previous personal best time recording a new time of 1:24.51. Teammate 10 year old James Gray also swam extremely well which resulted in him securing the bronze medal, and lowered his pb time by a huge 6.73 seconds to 1:34.88.

The battle continued to the next round, with JJ Moultrie-Waring stepping raising the level in the boys  50m backstroke to take podium place and gold ahead of his competition in a new pb time of 38.28. Again, teammate James Gray closely followed behind recording another significant pb time taking 2.34 seconds off. The morning session saw Moultrie-Waring in another hard fought contest in the 50m freestyle event in an excellent race in which he took silver in a time of 37.89, just 0.1 off the gold. James Gray also finished the morning session on a high, securing another bronze medal to add to his collection. The afternoon session saw a role reversal as James Gray took top spot and Gold in the boy’s 10 years 50m breaststroke event, in which James finished in 44.98, with JJ coming in to take 4th place. The final event of the day for this age group saw JJ Moultrie-Waring once again take the gold medal in the 50m butterfly.  JJ’s time of 39.38 was a new pb time by an improvement of 0.91 second. James Gray also secured his third medal of the day with another bronze but in doing so recorded a massive pb taking 1.74 seconds off his previous.

In the boys 11 years age group, InCAS were represented by Kieran Wilson who also swam well to indicate the depth of talent within the Club. Kieran opened his account with a strong swim and well deserved silver medal in the 50m freestyle event taking 0.99 off his time of 34.05. With success breeds success, and this was evident with Kieran capturing a second silver in the boys 11 years 100m IM. The medal was however outshone by scale of his improvement, taking an astounding 25.64 seconds off his previous personal best time. Kieran complimented these result with a bronze medal from the 50m butterfly in a time of 44.95, an improvement of 1.34.

Not to be outdone by their male teammates, the InCAS female swimmers also swam well to record a varying degree of success across the board, but more importantly personal best times were being recorded in abundance. Worthy of note were the swims by the newer members who enjoyed their baptism into competitive swimming were 8 year old Katelyn MacNeil who recorded massive personal best times in the girls 25m butterfly and 25m freestyle events; as did 8 year old Erin Hutton in the 25m backstroke and her first competitive medal.

Other InCAS swimmers who celebrated personal best times were: Dana Brand; Lee Harrison; Rebecca Wilson; Rowan Ormiston; Erin Donaldson; Cara Smyth; Andrew Morris; Olivia Ballantine; Rachel Ingram.

Whilst the InCAS swimmers were triumphant across their individual events, they also tasted success  in the relay events, securing further medals. The 10 and 11 years age group team of Kieran Wilson, Olivia Ballantine, JJ Moultrie-Waring and Rowan Ormiston secured bronze in the mixed 100m medley relay event. They also improved upon his position to take the silver medal in the mixed 100m freestyle relay. However the relay event of the day, the mixed 200m freestyle cannonball relay put the biggest smiles on many of the InCAS swimmers in which they take the bronze medal. The team consisted of Erin Hutton; Katelyn MacNeil; Rebecca Wilson; Harris Bruce; Dana Brand; JJ Moultrie-Waring; Rowan Ormiston; and Kieran Wilson.

A fantastic days competition from these aspiring young swimmers who represented InCAS in good form.

Scottish National Age Groups Championships

Some of West Fife’s most talented swimmers represented the newly formed Fife Performance Swim Squad at the Scottish National Age Groups Championships held at the International swimming venue at Tollcross, Glasgow over four days of competition between 7-10 April.

The principle behind the squad, which is open to swimmers from all ten Clubs within Fife who have the ability to meet the squad criteria, enables the swimmers compete as Fife Performance Swim Squad at all National competitions and selected meets in England or abroad, and swim with their home Clubs at District and other domestic competitions.

Top swimmer in terms of medals was InCAS swimmer, 12 year old Tain Bruce, in the Girls 10-12 years age group. Tain amassed an outstanding 6 Scottish National Age Group Champion titles over the course of the competition. Her individual titles came in the 100m Butterfly, in a new East District Age Group Record of 1:07.18;  the 200m Butterfly; 100m and also the 200m Freestyle; 200m and 400m IM’s. Tain’s swims all resulted in personal best times being set, with the greatest improvement coming in the 200m Butterfly achieving a 11.45 second improvement.

Another InCAS swimmer, 11 year old Lauren Pirouet, also demonstrated her worth in the 10-12 years age group. Lauren won a silver in the 1500m freestyle event in time of 18:58.31 which set a new Scottish National Age Group Record, and beat the previous record by some 32 seconds. This time also set a new East District Age Group Record and also set a new East District Age Group Record for the 800m freestyle with her split time from the 1500m event. Lauren also reached five finals finishing fourth in the 200m freestyle, fifth in the 200m backstroke setting two new East District Age Group Records in the process, seventh in the 400m IM, and eighth in the 100m backstroke despite recovering from sickness earlier in the day which forced her withdrawal from the 400m freestyle. A fantastic achievement swimming against 12 year olds.

Tain and Lauren also competed in the Girls 11-13 Years relay events, alongside Morven Rae-Seaman and Rachel Smith of FINS. The team excelled and won the 4 x 200m freestyle relay in a time just 2 seconds outside of the Scottish Record, and shall now represent Scotland at the British Age Group Championships to be held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield in July. The quartet also secured two further bronze medals in the 4 x 100m Medlay relay, and the 4 x 100m freestyle relay.

Another InCAS swimmer representing the Fife Performance Swim Squad was 12 year old Jack Harrison in the 200m backstroke. Jack, in his first major national competition shall extremely well to record a fantastic personal best time of 2:44.67, and finish ahead of his adversaries.

Also competing in the Boys relay team was InCAS swimmer, Conor Nally, who swam in the 4 x 100m freestyle and  4 x 200m freestyle relays, finishing in 17th and 16th places respectively.

All in all an excellent representation by InCAS swimmers within the Fife Performance Swim Squad team.

Top Boy’s for InCAS & Personal Bests Galore!

Last weekend saw an opportunity for the younger swimmers within InCAS to compete in the Warrender Baths Annual Age Group Meet held at Glenrothes pool to demonstrate their worth, and what a show they put on.

Saturday saw the 9 and 10 years age groups take to the water, and they collectively gave InCAS something to cheer about. Without a doubt two young swimmers stood out above the rest with their strong performances throughout the day.

In the Boy’s 9 Years age group, Harris Bruce, established an early authority over his rivals with an outstanding swim in the opening event, the 100m IM, finishing some 5 seconds ahead of his nearest competition in a time of 1:26.62. Harris then continued his form into the 50m backstroke event, again coming in ahead to secure Gold in 39.22 and also establishing a new Meet Record in the process. Not content with this strong start to his competition, Bruce then looked to complete a successful morning with his favoured stroke, the 50m butterfly, and again did not disappoint, finishing in 1st place in 38.20, an amazing 7 seconds ahead of second place.

The afternoon session also saw Harris demonstrate his worth at the longer distance in the 200m freestyle, where once again he finished in top spot touching in on 2:39.82, another personal best time. He then went onto his 5th event of the day in the 50m breaststroke, and recorded another 2 second personal best time whilst taking the silver spot on the podium. At the close of the day, in his final event, the 50m freestyle sprint Harris captured his 5th Gold of the day in a close race and in turn placing him as the 9 Years Top Boy Award.

Not to be outdone was 10 year old JJ Moultrie-Waring, who sought to emulate his younger teammate, and he done so superbly demonstrating some lovely stroke technique and race composure in his opening event, the 200m freestyle in which he controlled the race from start to finish to record a time of 2:40.75, some 11 seconds ahead of his competitors, and a new personal best time. He then went into his next race, the 50m freestyle with some confidence which allowed him to take the Gold medal after a strong swim in 33.29, again another personal best time.

The afternoon saw Moultrie-Waring  continue with his good form in  the 100m IM event, demonstrating all four strokes with excellent execution. The next race also brought more gold for JJ, with a controlled swim in the 50m backstroke, recording another new personal best time of 39.69. The final race of the day for JJ in the 50m butterfly, also brought more success to this young aspiring swimmer achieving another Gold in 40.29, and yet another personal best time. In all 5 Gold’s from 5 races, and 100% success brought the accolade of the 10 Years Top Boy Award to JJ Moultrie-Waring.

The girl swimmers of InCAS were equally keen to establish themselves on the first day of competition, and they too produced some outstanding performances which bode well for the future of InCAS.

Swimming in the 100m IM event, top InCAS female was 9 year old Olivia Ballantine swimming her first competitive IM race came in 8th position, and was closing followed by her teammates, of Ellie Turner, Dana Brand, Ali Moultrie-Waring, and Cara Smyth who all recorded personal best times, with Dana and Cara taking in excess of 22 seconds from their previous times.

In the Girls 10 years age group Leighona Harper performed well over the course of the days events taking the 5th place medal in the 200m freestyle. Leighona also went onto to consistently  record finishes in the top 10, and no less than 4 personal bests from her days swims.

In the girls 9 and under group, the band of InCAS swimmers were joined by Rachel Ingram, with Olivia Ballantine once again finishing as top InCAS performer in the 50m backstroke closely followed by Dana Brand. In the 50m butterfly event, young 7 year old Ellie Turner gave her performance of the day finishing as the top InCAS swimmer recording an outstanding time of 52.13 and finishing in 11th place in a group of 24 older swimmers.

In the girls 9 years 200m freestyle, the trio of Olivia Ballantine, Dana Brand and Cara Smyth all swam well to produce sizeable lifetime bests. Olivia also went on to win a 5th place medal  in the 50m breaststroke event in a time of 54.19, with Rachel Ingram finishing in a fine 10th spot.

The second day of competition brought the 12 years old to compete, with InCAS represented by Jack Harrison and Emily Adams.

Both Harrison and Adams started their day’s competition in the 200m freestyle with Jack Harrison securing a 6th place medal in a new personal best time of 2:28.46. Emily in her first competitive 200m freestyle race swam well to record her first time and establish a benchmark for future competition.

Jack Harrison then went on to improve upon his previous placing with a 5th place in the 50m freestyle, touching in on 31.36, another personal best time. And to prove a point, Harrison then went on to finish in 4th spot in the 200m IM taking some 12 seconds off his previous time. He then went on to secure yet another medal placing in the 50m backstroke, taking 5th place. An outstanding days performance from this young gentleman.

Emily Adams, showing improvement throughout the day went onto compete in a further 4 events and is looking encouraging for future competitions.

All in all, InCAS, despite only taking a small contingent of swimmers consisting of Harris Bruce, JJ Moultrie-Waring, Olivia Ballantine, Dana Brand, Cara Smyth, Ellie Turner, Leighona Harper, Ali Moutrie-Waring, Rachel Ingram, Emily Adams and Jack Harrison secured two Best Swimmer Awards, 10 Gold’s, 1 Silver and an impressive 38 personal best times.
