| By
way of introducing alternative aquatic activity within the Club, we
have been running 'fun' InCAS water polo
session on a Monday evening at HMS Caledonia with the assistance of
Brian Campbell, InCAS parent and Dunfermline
Waterpolo Club (DWPC) coach, providing our swimmers with an
alternative to their lane swimming, Sessions are held in the deep end
of the pool so the kids are still training and building-up
strength in the water during the course of the session.
InCAS WP have also
competed in the District Water Polo Development League with the team
comprising of both members and a few guests. The young team won the
2007/08 competition with swimmers of all abilities taking part and
enjoying the games. Another recent success was at the annual Sports
For All Waterpolo Tournament held at Carnegie Leisure Centre. InCAS WP
were narrowly beaten in the final by Leeds (6-8).
Brian comments,
"During my many years involved in swimming I have never
understood why swimming and water polo are seen as being mutually
exclusive, indeed I believe that a Club which can encompass all
aquatic disciplines will provide a much 'richer' environment for the
kids to be a part of and will have a greater chance of long term
stability. Indeed when Incas were originally formed, a number of water
polo players (including myself) were in that first group of around 30
swimmers. InCAS have been one of the few clubs in my experience who
have welcomed swimmers whatever their motivation be it competitive
swimming, water polo, masters and even open water (as your president
would point out). Offering waterpolo sessions
gains stability both financially and socially through the retention of
older members for beyond the usual drop-out age of 13-14 which also
provides the younger swimmers with older members to 'look up to'.
There are great opportunities now for water polo players with those
reaching the GB level going on to compete in the European
championships as Alasdair Campbell and now Andrew Woodall have done
and the twins (Christopher and Darren Campbell) hope to do in the
future."
For those not aspiring
to this level there are also various other levels to compete in. Some
swimmers have expressed an interest in trying water polo and competing
for the Club in matches. To achieve this, Brian invites them to attend
DWPC sessions at the
Carnegie Centre on a Sunday from 5.30-6.30pm and a Tuesday 8pm-9pm. As
all InCAS are already registered with S.A.S.A. there are no Insurance
issues. Furthermore, no membership of DWPC is required unless they
wish to compete in competitions for the Club and a monthly charge will
only be requested after the kids have confirmed that they wish to
continue playing, Until this time there is no charge for the
sessions.
Water polo should not be
considered as an alternative to competitive swimming, but a
complementary discipline. Should you wish to discuss this further
